Byobu Screen Exhibition during the Gion Festival (Byobu Matsuri)

Byobu Matsuri is a traditional custom in which homes in the yamahokocho districts (neighborhoods associated with the Gion Festival floats known as yama and hoko) open their doors to the public and display their treasured folding screens (byobu).

The Autumn Grasses eight-panel folding screen by Tawaraya Sōtatsu and the fan-shaped Gion Festival Scene painting, attributed to Tosa Mitsuzane, will be specially exhibited.

Same-day tickets will be sold at the front entrance of the Sugimoto Residence from 4:00 p.m. on 7/14 and from 9:00 a.m. on 7/15 and 7/16.

Decoration to Enjoy Ato-matsuri

During this period, works including Chrysanthemums Through the Ages (six-panel folding screen) and Lotus Pond Through the Ages (folding screen) will be on display.
