Public Viewing “Tango-no-sekku” of the Sugimoto Residence: Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from May 1 to 24

The Sugimoto Residence, a designated National Important Cultural Property and one of Kyoto’s largest traditional kyo-machiya townhouses built 156 years ago, will be open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from May 1 to 24, 2026.

Dolls from the late Edo to Meiji periods, preserved in the Sugimoto family collection, will be on display.

This is a rare opportunity to view dolls that reflect the era of the Meiji Restoration, including a doll of Emperor Ōjin wearing an eboshi hat and a gentle expression, crafted by Maruhei Ōki Ningyōten; a valiant warrior doll associated with the birthplace of the wife of the ninth-generation head of the family; and a dignified doll of Emperor Meiji in Western attire, accompanied by attendants and retainers.
