The Sugimoto Residence, a traditional Kyomachiya townhouse over 150 years old and designated as a National Important Cultural Property, will be open for public viewing every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from April 4 to June 15, except for April 25-27 and May 30-June 1. *The Residence will be closed on April 13 and 18 for private events.
From April to June, the Sugimoto Residence will be set up as it was in the past, reflecting the changing seasons. On May 2, 3, and 4, dolls for Boys’ Day (Tango no Sekku) will be on display.
The Sugimoto family’s collection of Boys’ Day dolls includes dignified warrior dolls in armor, as well as rare dolls, including a depiction of Emperor Meiji dressed in Western clothing.
Original goods from the Sugimoto Residence that reflect the life and culture of Kyoto’s merchant class, as well as tea leaves and our traditional amazake, make perfect souvenirs.
